Presentation of this site

The present site is under the responsibility of a Swiss network of institutions and health professionals who collaborate for the prevention of mortality and morbidity attributable to Influenza.

The site is available in the three national languages, through the support of the Federal Office of Public Health.

Since 1996, Influenza vaccination is officially recommended in Switzerland and reimbursed through health insurance for vulnerable groups Health institutions in French speaking Switzerland have organized information campaigns on vaccination since 1995 and the Federal Office of public health has organized national campaigns since 2001. The result has been a gradual increase in vaccination coverage of high risk groups: for example, the reported vaccination coverage of the Geneva population over 65 years increased from 20% to 59 % during the period 1991-2000. At national level, it was estimated in 2001 that 48% of senior citizens were vaccinated. Vaccination of health professionals has increased over the last few years, but remains low, with a national average of 21% (28% in French speaking Switzerland). The present site contains information for the general public and for health professionals explaining the reasons why vaccination is recommended. It also reflects prevention activities and public health-oriented research in Switzerland. This site can help professionals from other countries make contact with Swiss counterparts working in flu prevention and research. All queries to this site are answered by a public health physician with a long experience in flue prevention and can be asked by clicking here.
